Back on the grid again, after a holiday week in Amsterdam & Barcelona, which brought some deep thoughts on life online & off as well as some literal fireworks.

Brassland is 10: A short attention span essay on publicity, intimacy & the community behind the label's anniversary.

Here are some more-poised than usual thoughts on the first ten years of this record label-like thing I've been running. To cover the entire bodily spectrum in a single mixed metaphor, I'd like to think this piece is a bit less of a gut-level kneejerk response than I usually muster, a bit more of a heady, meditative deep thought.

Real temples of culture: a short attention span essay on El Sistema, MNMP, art education & art institutions

Jai Paul's "BTSTU" still sounds like the future

Jai Paul's debut single has been floating around the internet for well over a year now, and the internet claims that it was originally a demo he cut in 2007 -- but I wonder how long it will take for this to not sound like the future? Let's try it out one more time.

About a year ago, I put out on my label Brassland what I think is one of the best records I've ever had anything to do with, a strange & mysterious song cycle called The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton by a group called Clogs.

In 2010, Sufjan Stevens came out of a self-imposed bout of musical silence. In 2011, Iron & Wine releases his first major label statement. What do they have in common? Here is some musical mathematics.

Two Christmas standards (Sufjan, Ian Axel, Julia Nunes, the Dessner Bros.)

Generally speaking I find Christmas to be a bummer time of year. Quiet too quiet. Friends have headed home. Not enough ambient buzz to distract me from...

A few months ago I began advising a young pop musician from New York named Ian Axel. He's recorded a holiday song with an equally young YouTube phenom named Julia Nunes.

The Revolution will be Advertised: brief thought on political art

I won't pretend like I trust or respect political art. I think it's inherently suspect. Which is not to say that art cannot have a powerful galvanizing effect on politics, or that it cannot be great art.

Deep thoughts about the election (before & after)

I have an idealistic view of what it is to have a career. I like to imagine that people are careful about choosing a life's work. I like to think that pointless activities -- while key to recreation -- are banished from the world of work. Unfortunately there is a sharp rebuke to this idea. In a word: Politics.

It used to be easy to understand the difference between Pop Music and Art Music. Pop Music was awesome (but kind of slight) and Art Music was awesome (but kind of tedious).

Some quick thoughts on the death of the record as object

I can attest to the fact that it's rough out there for recorded music. As some of you may know, I founded and run a record label. As of about six months ago I was running another one as well. And about two months before that I was still lending a hand on a third label.

Scott Williams starring in “Nirvana on ice”: a worthy internet meme & some thoughts on web commentary

I've been sitting on this internet meme for awhile. I've done the research. It's not an internet parody, a YouTube vid equivalent of Blades of Glory. Nope, rather this is figure skater Scott Williams' championship effort to revolutionize skating.

What Mark Morris thinks about butts

Virtues one might not expect to find at an avant-garde(ish) music festival in the American South

Apologies for being somewhat slack on the blogging front these last few weeks. Exciting activities among the family of musicians I've been working with the past few years have kept me away from computers more than usual. I spent much of the last week hanging out in the American South -- a part of the country I rarely get to see -- on the occasion of Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"I have felt the pulse of modern art and know that it will die! This knowledge, however, fills me not with despondency but with joy, for I know at the same time that it is not art in general which will perish but only our own particular type of art—which stands remote from modern life—, whereas true—imperishable—constantly renewed art is still to be born...

If you know nothing about Black Mountain College, where the photo below was taken, start here. Its teaching ranks were populated not by academics but practitioners. Among those who taught there during its brief, 24-year lifespan were Josef and Anni Albers, Alfred Kazin, John Cage, Harry Callahan, Robert Creeley, Merce Cunningham, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Walter Gropius, Franz Kline, Charles Olson, Aaron Siskind, and Robert Motherwell. (I'll let you Google the unfamiliar names.)

Gaga as gesamtkunstwerk & Fever Ray's melting face: a short attention span essay on operatic gestures in contemporary pop music

Let's lead this post with a bit of theater: Karin Dreijer Andersson aka Fever Ray (or maybe it's a stand-in?) accepting an award for best dance artist at that country's equivalent of the Grammy Awards. (They're called the Grammis. American cultural imperialism is no joke.):
Brian Eno has beef with Steve Reich, enjoys musical seduction

Few artists' careers are as unimpeachable as Brian Eno's. (Well, ok, there is that Paul Simon record.) Anyway, you can marvel at Eno's recorded accomplishments elsewhere. As impressive as his long list of amazing, culture-impacting albums, though, is the way he talks about music:

Addendum: Mary Margaret O'Hara > Mike Bloomberg, U2, BlackBerries

I don't want my permanent record to reflect that my favorite things are BlackBerries, Mike Bloomberg & U2. So, to clarify some confusions that have arisen in the real world since posting last week about Bono's Bloomberg shout out I need to make three points.

Last night I saw U2's 360° Tour. This was definitely the WTF moment of the night.
