Mixtape Zero: Test Pattern aka the changing nature of media consumption

It would be a major understatement to say the internet has transformed the consumption and creation of media of all kinds. It's important to discuss these changes. But sometimes an internet surfer just wants to dance!

In the interest of encouraging said behavior, I've begun posting a semi-regular series of mixtapes to the internet. Below is the first of what I hope to be many more.

I decided to start making these things because while it's great to discuss the changes in media, it's also kind of wonky and let's admit it, specialized & boring, to do so. I'd rather just share the amazing range of possibilities internet consumption puts at our fingertips.

But, okay, a bit of background & a rationale for Why Mixtapes? And Why Now?

So this post is not without it's small share of discussion, one of the major changes taking place for the producers and publishers of music is a consumption-based model rather than a one-time purchase model. Intrenet blowhard (and extremely wise analyst of music business culture) Bob Lefsetz can explain this way better & with way more passion than I can.

The demise of the one-time purchase model is due to the (to my mind) inevitable rise of unlimited streaming services such as Spotify. What that simultaneous demise/rise brings with it is a completly overwhelming range of choices. What that overwhelming range of choices brings with it is an increasing need for curation.

Which is a longwinded way of saying here is the tracklist for this first mix I'm offering to you:

1. Seefeel "Step Down"
2. Lou Canon "My Girls"
3. Sharon Van Etten "For You"
4. tUnE-yArDs "Bizness"
5. People Get Ready "Three Strangers" (demo)
