The fever for universities: critical thought and social mobility in a small Angolan city

Speaker:
Jess Auerbach - graduate student in anthropology, Stanford
Meeting description
Jess will give a talk in which she explores the implications of Angola's transition from socialist to capitalist state through the lens of university education. Contrasting the experiences of the generation educated in Cuba and the former USSR with those of Angolans studying in Brazil and at home today, she will argue for an attention to 'structures of thinking' (c.f. Raymond Williams) as politically-influenced experience.
Co-sponsored with the Center for African Studies “Africa Table.”
