A peer-reviewed, digital journal dedicated to the study of premodernity, Republics of Letters will relaunch in 2023. Our editorial team seeks to capture, develop, and incite research at Stanford and beyond. In a first phase, we will solicit “lightning articles,” short academic essays (between 1,500 and 5,000 words, excluding notes) based on emerging research. We look forward to publishing the work of researchers in the humanities who have recently initiated dialogue or debate within our scholarly community, including advanced Ph.D. candidates.
Republics of Letters is sponsored by the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL) at Stanford University. Its new editorial team is Laura Stokes, Nicole T. Hughes, and Roland Greene.

Fora
In addition to our regular issues, Republics of Letters publishes discussions that extend across issues, called Fora. As the name suggests, a Forum is organized topically and expands over time. Working outside the temporal limits of periodic publication, the Fora keep scholarly discussion open-ended and inclusive.
